چکیده

8 Definitions 9 Heat flow. The rate of thermal energy transfer in a medium 10 driven either conductively along a thermal gradient or 11 advectively via mass transport. The standard unit is 12 watts, W. The term is also used to describe a subdiscipline 13 of geophysics, as in the title of this entry. 14 Conductive heat flux. The heat flow per unit area diffusing 15 by conduction along a thermal gradient, determined as the 16 product of the thermal gradient and thermal conductivity. 17 The standard unit is W m . The term heat flow density 18 has been used correctly as a synonym; the term heat flow, 19 traditionally but inexactly used as a synonym for heat flux, 20 more strictly applies to the integrated heat flux over 21 a specified area or region (watts). 22 Advective heat flux. The rate of heat transfer per unit area 23 carried by a moving medium, proportional to the velocity 24 and the heat capacity of the medium. The standard unit is 25 W m . 26 Thermal conductivity. The quantity that defines the ability 27 of a medium to transfer heat by steady-state diffusion. The 28 standard unit is W m 1 K . 29 Hydrothermal circulation. Large-scale pore-fluid convec30 tion driven by thermal buoyancy, in which fluid flux and 31 advective heat flux are strongly influenced by the perme32 ability structure of the host formation. 33 History of observations

Observations and models of lateral hydrothermal circulation on a young ridge flank: Numerical evaluation of thermal and chemical constraints

[1] We used a two-dimensional coupled heat and fluid flow model to investigate large-scale, lateral heat and fluid transport on the eastern flank of the Juan de Fuca Ridge. Cool seawater in the natural system is inferred to enter basement where it is exposed close to the spreading center and flow laterally beneath thick sediments, causing seafloor heat flow to be depressed relative to that inpu...

Models of hydrothermal circulation within 106 Ma seafloor: Constraints on the vigor of fluid circulation and crustal properties, below the Madeira Abyssal Plain

[1] Heat flow measurements colocated with seismic data across 106 Ma seafloor of the Madeira Abyssal Plain (MAP) reveal variations in seafloor heat flow of ±10–20% that are positively correlated with basement relief buried below thick sediments. Conductive finite element models of sediments and upper basement using reasonable thermal properties are capable of generating the observed positive co...

Observations and Models

Geophysical observations and models provide important constraints on the properties of seafloor hydrothermal systems and associated fluxes. These studies indicate how the upper lithosphere is constructed and evolves, characteristics that are related to hydrothermal systems through the mechanical state of the lithosphere and the availability of heat to drive fluid flow. Geophysical studies illus...

Hydrothermal recharge and discharge guided by basement outcrops on 0.7–3.6 Ma seafloor east of the Juan de Fuca Ridge: Observations and numerical models

[1] The nature of ridge-flank hydrothermal circulation guided by basement outcrops protruding through thick sediments is constrained on the eastern flank of the Juan de Fuca Ridge using combined bathymetric, seismic, and thermal observations and analytical and numerical calculations of coupled fluid-heat flow. Observational data near the western edge of the survey area indicate that young, cool...

Rates of flow and patterns of fluid circulation

The rates and patterns of fluid circulation in seafloor hydrothermal systems control the efficiency of lithospheric heat extraction, the nature of fluid–rock interaction, and the extent of seafloor and sub-seafloor biospheres supported by fluid, energy, and solute fluxes. It has been challenging to determine the patterns and rates of fluid flow within seafloor hydrothermal systems for several r...
